e-Commerce: Setting Up Your e-Commerce Site Is Easy – Making Money Is The Hard Part…

e-Commerce shopping cart

OK…

  • You’ve done a good job of driving highly targeted visitors to you site.
  • Your conversion rate (visitors to sales) is good.

But your still not making much profit.

What’s wrong?

You’re probably not up-selling, or not doing it effectively.

What is “up-selling”?

When a visitor puts something into their shopping cart and proceeds to go through your checkout process and you offer them…

A larger size or greater quantity at a one-time great price, or…

A related item for a one-time great price, or…

An up-grade for a one-time great price, or…

All 3…

…those are “up-sells”.

Up-sells are usually very high profit items for the e-commerce business, and sold with very little effort. It’s just a one-time, take it or leave it offer that they see at some point during the checkout process.

Important…Do not offer any up-sell UNTIL they have started through the checkout process.

New car dealers don’t make most of their profit on selling you the car. They make their profit on the extras and options. And they NEVER even bring these up…UNTIL you have agreed to buy the car.

Take a lesson from them.

Amazon.com does a good job of up-selling.

However, in my personal opinion the “800 Pound Gorilla” of up-selling is… ProFlowers.com

ProFlowers.com is an absolute master of the up-sell. If you have an e-Commerce business you would be wise to go all the way through their checkout process, including making the purchase. And take notes and “screen shots” (print them out) as you go.
