Around December 7th, 2011, Google started running their own ads promoting Adwords (PPC). Here is what the Google ad told “SEO” searchers…
“Forget about SEO. To be visible in Google today, try AdWords.”
Straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, or maybe the other end depending on your point of view.
Either way, the fact remains that Google has said to “forget about SEO” if you want customers.
This is exactly what we’ve been telling our clients for months.
National SEO is a waste of money and time…because it is very easily trumped by Adwords ads.
However, local SEO is alive and well and strongly supported by Google.
And while it used to be true that searchers tended to ignore paid ads, that clearly isn’t the case any more. If it was true, you wouldn’t see so many Adwords ads by companies of all sizes.
Use your head…
Companies don’t waste money on advertising that doesn’t work.
Google also stated, in testimony before a congressional investigating committee a couple of months ago, that their algorithm changes about every “12 hours“.
With Google’s algorithm changing about every 12 hours, how can you, or anyone keep up?
Answer: You’re not supposed to.
That’s the whole point.
Google doesn’t make a dime on SEO.
Google makes money on PPC (Adwords).
Therefore, it is to their advantage to make SEO as difficult as possible, and PPC as easy and fast as possible.
The Bottom Line?
If you’re in business on the Internet today, PPC is what you should be spending money on. Not national SEO. And that’s according to Ma Google.
You should also be using local SEO, if your business is confined to a small local area.
