Ever have that dream where you’re in some very public place…and you’re totally naked?
Well, good blogging is like that dream.
You might feel embarrassed, but you tough it out.
Nobody wants to read a blog where you agree with with the majority all the time.
First, everybody knows that’s not normal.
Second, it’s downright boring.
People want to read blogs where the writer takes a stand, even if it’s unpopular sometimes. Especially if it’s unpopular which, of course, is the whole point behind the success of ”reality” TV shows.
People want to read your blog because they want to know what you think. So don’t be afraid to take an unpopular stand, if that’s what you really believe.
Remember:
- Controversy draws interest.
- Interest draws readers.
- Readers tell their friends.
When was the last time sometime told you, “You’ve got to read so-and-so’s blog today. It’s really dull and boring!”
What Are Your Core Values?
What do you stand for, as a person?
How do you live your life?
What principles will you never, ever violate for any reason?
Not for money. Not for fame. Not to be “popular”. Not for any reason whatsoever.
Write these principles down where you can see them everyday.
Let these principles guide your blog…and your life.
For example, if one of your core principles is that you believe it is wrong to cheat…then you can’t advocate gray and black hat SEO tactics in your blog. If you do, you just violated one of your core principles. You’ve proven you’re not consistent. You’ve proven you don’t really stand for anything. You’ve also proven you can’t be trusted.
What do you believe is good/bad, right/wrong?
What do you hold sacred?
If you’ve never asked yourself these questions, you just discovered one of the reasons why you’re having trouble in your adult life.
Sit down and do some serious soul searching.
Then write down what you believe, at your core.
This is often a very eye-opening, and painful exercise.
Yes, if politicians stood up for their core values (assuming, of course, they have any), we wouldn’t have the gutless wonders in office at all levels of government that we do today. People whose “core values” point in whatever direction the current polls indicate…have no core values.
People like that, politicians or otherwise, are as useless as a flag in the wind.
Decide what you’re core values are, then get some backbone and don’t be afraid to stand up for them.
Be crystal clear what you stand for…and what you will not stand for.
Live by these core values and you will be consistent.
Now apply your core values to your blogging.
Happy Blogging!
